School-Based Sports Initiatives
The British Columbia government supports many initiatives designed to help young British Columbians learn skills and participate in physical activity and sport.
External Sport Credits – grade 10, 11 and 12 students who compete in major games and competitions can earn credits toward graduation. Other sport and recreation disciplines (such as scuba diving certification available through the Sport and Recreation Branch’ s Aboriginal Youth FIRST program) are eligible for external credits or independent directed studies.
Sport Participation Program – For the past six years, our government has partnered with the federal government to fund sport specific opportunities within schools for children and youth. Provincial sport organizations organize and deliver sport programming during and after schools hours with the goal of providing quality sport education to the students and provide teacher mentorship, education and resources so they can continue to independently offer the sport unit to present and future students. Examples of these programs in a variety of schools across the province include the following sports: athletics (Run, Jump, Throw), badminton, basketball, dragon boating, golf, gymnastics, hockey, karate, rowing, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball, wrestling.
Premier’s Sport Awards Program (through 2010 Legacies Now) – is a physical education resource program designed to help teachers and community instructors teach children (ages 8-14) their basic sport skills.
SportFit (through 2010 Legacies Now) - As a fitness motivation and sport education program, SportFit™ is promoting healthy, active lifestyles in Canadian children and youth. SportFit™ enables children and youth to discover new ways of being physically active by identifying sports matching each participant’s personal preferences and physical abilities.
