Building Canada Fund - Communities Component

Program funds have been fully allocated. Applications are no longer being accepted.

About the Program

The Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund recognizes that smaller communities have unique infrastructure needs, and therefore targets projects in communities with populations of less than 100,000. Projects were selected through an application-based process.

Projects are cost-shared on a one-third basis among federal, provincial and local government counterparts. Projects related to drinking water, wastewater, public transit, National Highway System, green energy, solid waste management, brownfield redevelopment, culture, sport, connectivity and broadband, local road, shortline railways, short sea shipping, local and regional airports, tourism, (convention centres or exhibition hall-type facilities) collaborative projects, disaster mitigation, recreation, and flood protection were funded through the Communities Component.

The program has approved 131 community projects totalling over $561 million, which represents over $175 million from the Government of Canada, over $175 million from the Province of British Columbia, and the remainder from local governments. The program received over 600 funding applications. For more information, refer to the official program website.
