Creating new opportunities for B.C.’s forest workers
Opportunities created
for Forest Workers concluded as of March 31,
2011.
As a three-year initiative, the Community
Development Trust program was established in
2008 as an immediate helping hand to forest and
resource workers affected by the economic
downturn.
Forest and resource workers throughout the
province received funding to assist in a
three-pronged approach:
- Transitional Assistance, provided new options to
older workers interested in leaving their forest
sector jobs without creating a skill shortage.
- Tuition Assistance, assisted laid-off forest
workers to upgrade their skills and education to
prepare for success in British Columbia’s 21st
century economy.
- Job Opportunities, supported activities that
provided short-term employment for impacted
resource workers while helping to meet
government objectives that benefitted
resource-dependent communities.
The Community Development Trust initiative was
all about opening doors to a successful future,
making a positive difference for over 11,000
forest and resource workers and their families
in British Columbia.
